Back to the future: Sudanese CCP alumnus produces music video for a traditional nursery rhyme

"Music videos provide a great opportunity to make our enormous wealth of traditional folk music more accessible to young people", says CrossCulture alumnus and filmmaker Mohamed Emugtaba Aamir from Sudan. It is an opportunity and at the same time a challenge, as the number of well-produced music videos that have been made in Africa's third largest country is almost non-existent.

In 2015, I showed the video work “A Dowry for Mahrou“ (2006) by Samira Eskandarfar, who lives and works in Teheran, in Kunsthalle Bielefeld. The reactions of the visitors during the exhibition that lasted from July 22nd to August 30th in 2015 were interesting to me, as the image of Iran –without doubt ever-changing – is quite deadlocked for many.

Video: Exhibition "Re-Frame Islam" in Tuebingen

Violent and dangerous? "Most of the images we see in media about Muslims are negative," says Nassim Hadj-benali, CCP alumnus and freelance artist from Algeria. His photo project "Re-Frame Islam" draws a different picture: portraits of Muslims from the USA and Germany whose smiling is contagious. The photos are exhibited at the German-American Institute in Tübingen (d.a.i.) until 20 April 2017.

Alumni seminar in Germany

The seminar was attended by thirteen alumni from more than five different countries of origin or assignment, including delegates from Poland, Romania, Russia, Kazachstan and Kyrgyzstan. They also represented a variety of different professional fields, such as journalism, cultural projects, intercultural collaboration and youth empowerment.
